(Proposal) The Second Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is conceived as a public cultural platform where culture and everyday life intersect seamlessly within Seoul’s urban environment. Rather than standing as an isolated monumental building, it is designed as an open structure that allows the flows of the city, the park, and the Han River to permeate the architecture, directly engaging with the daily lives of citizens.
Performances and exhibitions extend beyond the interior of the theater into plazas and public spaces through two large-scale projection screens, creating an environment in which people can participate in artistic experiences without even entering the building. The main performance halls are located underground to preserve the landscape of Yeouido Park, while the ground level is composed of plazas, outdoor spaces, and rooftop terraces. These areas form a cultural infrastructure that encourages people to stay and gather regardless of whether performances are taking place.
This spatial configuration lowers the threshold for accessing the arts and allows cultural experiences to accumulate naturally within everyday life. The Second Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is not merely a collection of programs, but a new cultural landmark for Seoul—one that is completed through participation and shared experience.
